Get Ahold of God

Drive through prayers.

I drive up to the speaker, tell God what I need or want and then drive up to the window with my hand out, ready to receive it.  No...expecting to receive it.

It's a natural response to need.  I'm concerned about so many things and scripture tells me God is my provider.  So I drive up and into the speaker I tell Him...

  • God, groceries are running out and payday is 3 days away.  I'll pull up to the window to get that bag of groceries.
  • God, I lost my job and the bills are piling up.  I'll pull up to the window and get that surplus of cash I've been looking for.
  • God, my child is in the hospital.  I'll pull up to the window and get that healing from You.

Oswald Chambers says this:
"Whenever we insist that God should give us an answer to prayer we are off track.
The purpose of prayer is that we get ahold of God, not of the answer."

I pause.... 'The purpose of prayer is to get ahold of God, not of the answer".

I've been applying this to my quiet time lately and the difference in my walk is amazing.  My drive through orders needs are still there and very real in my daily life, but my fear of having them met is less and less prominent in my thought life.

I come to His table...
  • Not to place an order but to talk to Him.
  • To get to know more about Him and what He desires from me.
  • To see life through His perspective when I can
    • When I can't...to learn how to trust Him more completely

As I feed my soul with His thoughts on this topic, familiar scripture is taking on new meaning.

Matthew 6: 31-34
Therefore, do not worry, saying,
'What shall we eat?' or
'What shall we drink?' or
"What shall we wear?'.
.....For the heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,
and all these things shall be added to you.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.
Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

I still talk to Him about my needs and even my fears of how they will be met.  But instead of placing an order, I'm just sharing my heart and then crawling in His lap and listening to Him breath.
  • Breathing a word of encouragement.
  • Breathing a promise of better times
  • Breathing a song of comfort
After a time of quiet reflection on what His word needs to say
to me for this moment in time,
I ask Him this~
What do you desire of me today Lord?  How may I serve Your kingdom today.
Tell me what to do, show me the things for today and I'll come back tomorrow
so You can show me the next thing to do.

Our recipe today is Get Ahold of God

The ingredients are from  Matthew 6:31-34

The directions are to seek God in prayer with a desire to simply hear from Him, know Him more and deepen your relationship with Him.  Don't come with a 'drive through order', but come to listen and learn.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I come to Your table today desiring eyes that see Your kingdom needs above my personal needs.  I calm my heart and anxious thoughts by sharing them with You without expectation of having my 'order' delivered but with expectations of seeing You working in my life and the life of those around me. I surrender my 'needy' tendencies over to You and receive all the comfort, peace and direction You provide in return.  Show me what to do today Lord. Give me eyes to see what You are placing before me in this very moment, put blinders on me so I am not worried about tomorrow and fill me with a deeper level of trust in You. I come before You in the name of my Savior, Jesus Christ.  Amen.
